Plate VI Seed / India

Desk note / Autumn 2026

MucunaThe bean that makes you itch.

The pods are furred like a peach and should not be touched. The hairs carry an itch that has given the plant its names in half a dozen languages. Inside, the seeds are glossy, mottled, the size of a thumbnail.

In Qifu it is the lead: three hundred milligrams of Mucuna pruriens seed, on the shared base. Quanfu carries the same. Velvet bean to the farmers, cowhage to the English, kapikacchu to the Sanskrit books.

A monkey's itch

Kapikacchu means the itch of a monkey. The name is a warning about the pod, not a verdict on the seed. The Ayurvedic books filed the seed among the vajikarana, the preparations kept for virility, and used it for a trembling illness they called kampavata. Cowhage is an English mangling of the Hindi kiwach. Pruriens is Latin for itching. Every culture that met the plant started with the hairs.

A bean, then a molecule

In the early twentieth century the American South planted velvet bean across whole counties, as cattle feed and green manure. Nobody was reading its chemistry. That came later, from the laboratory. L-DOPA had been pulled from the broad bean in 1913. In the 1930s it was found in mucuna seed, in quantities the broad bean never had. L-DOPA is the body's step before dopamine. It is the same molecule neurologists would later prescribe for Parkinson's disease, which is why an old remedy for trembling makes sense in hindsight.

Family note

Fabaceae, with peas and beans. The active the papers name is L-DOPA, several per cent of the seed by weight. Because it is a medicine molecule as well as a plant one, mucuna is not for anyone taking Parkinson's medication, MAOI antidepressants or antipsychotics. We print that on the plate as well as the box.

Why it leads Qifu

Qifu is for when the want has gone quiet. Small trials of men under fertility screening, run in Lucknow, found better semen quality, higher testosterone and lower stress markers after three months of the seed. Small, early, and in a specific group of men. We keep it for the dopamine, the drive that sits upstream of everything else, and we say plainly what the trials were.

This journal will keep one plate at a time. History first. The formula second. Claims last, and only the ones we can stand behind.
